so long money

I'm not sure that 2011 is off to a good start for me...at least not financially.

It all started when I decided to make a car appointment last Tuesday to get my Saturn Ion the winterize package at Certiguard. A few hours after dropping it off they called to tell me that it needed some new parts (a new battery, brake cylinder, plug in for the block heater, air filter, and two tires). I begrudgingly told them to go ahead with everything necessary. Though it was very expensive, I was relieved to finally have my startup issue resolved (my car would randomly decide to start or not start) which they claimed should be fixed by the new battery.

The next day my car started with ease and the engine was blissfully quiet.
I drove out to my dental appointment and was dissapointed to discover that I need to go to a specialist to get bone grafting done before I can get a dental implant put in. This means more time, money, and pain. It's a mild surgical procedure but does include cutting, stitches, and, most commonly, four months of recovery time. Oh well what can you do? I need to get this done, so I contact the specialist and make an appointment.

The next day after my Chiro appointment I go outside and attempt to start my car. Nothing. Bah! I try about 20 more times before I finally grab the service card Certiguard gave me and call to arrange a tow. Of course the moment I'm off the phone it decides to start so I had to call them back and cancel the tow. I brought my car back in to Certiguard the next morning and ask them to look harder. They call me back about an hour later to tell me that my car needs a new ignition. Great. So here I am waiting to pay this off and hoping I'll have enough money to pay rent after all this.

Between all this, the ticket I got for going 65 in what I thought was a 60 zone but was actually a 50 zone on boxing day, and the parking ticket I incurred while parking my loaner car from Certiguard in my regular cars parking space at work, I think I might be in trouble.

Public transit is looking more and more tempting every day.

  1. Oh, that is frustrating. Did you manage to square away the parking ticket situation with work?

  2. I'm still awaiting Calgary parking authority's review and decision - I hope so though!

Excursions in beautiful Riviera Nayarit!

Well it's been just over a week now since I got back from my vacation. When I look back it's clear that outside of the normal bumps of any vacation, it was a very pleasant one! My parents and I flew into Puerto Vallarta at around 4pm on Friday July 1. As we stumbled into the crowded airport and attempted to manuever our way through the throngs of sales people, the kissy faces of a number of Mexican men made me suddenly all too conscious of my "Kiss me I'm Canadian" shirt. Oh well, like anyone would dare try with my Mom nearby (she gives off very protective Mom vibes...I think it may be because she's very protective). Anyway after a run in with a sales man who had briefly convinced us he was our Sun Wing Rep, we managed to slump into a nice air conditioned bus that took us the 20 minutes or so to Riviera Nayarit and up to our Resort "Riu Jalisco". It took me a good part of the trip to realize that the "j" is Jalisco is pronounced "h...

past perfect

One thing continually bothers me as I read Diana Gabaldon's richly detailed story of Claire Beauchampe, a doctor who innocently walks into a stone formation in Scotland and winds up in 16th century Scotland. Much has happened since this beginning...Claire has married Jamie Fraser the young and impressive Scottish Laird (against her wishes), fallen madly in love with him regardless of a precarious beginning to their relationship, followed him around as they attempt to evade the English, fought with him at the battle of Culloden, been forced back through the stones to safety with their unborn child, raised their child with her ambiguous husband from the future, returned after her child had grown up so that she could find him, made a new life with him in an American Colony, and been surprised by the appearance of her daughter and new son in law in 16th century America. Through their many, often rediculous, adventures there is that one thing that my brain ...

Gingerbread Cupcakes!

Well here they are, my rendition of a cupcake featuring ginger - in this case gingerbread cupcakes! I thought they turned out pretty good. I added 1/2 a cup more milk than I was supposed to and yet they managed to turn out fairly good texture wise. The flavour is a lot like gingerbread (with a few extra helpings of ginger) and the icing is a cream cheese icing.
