Adventures in Career Guidance part 2

The first meeting was very pleasant. My new career cousellor Emma and I both sat down with our steaming cups of tassimo green tea and chatted about why I was there, my likes and dislikes, and what I hoped to accomplish over the month. She was very engaging and understanding which helped me to open up to her. Over the course of a few days I found two tests in my inbox which was my homework for the week. I opened them up and completed them pretty much right away wondering what they were going to get out of my choosing between being a firefighter or a mathmatician and so on, but it was actually pretty impressive.

According to their list of 5 themes (artistic, social, realistic. enterprising, conventional and investigative), I am mostly astristic, social and conventional. The funny thing about having this theme code (ASC) is that A and C actually almost contradict each other...its kind of like saying I am a free spirited, creative type who enjoys structure and organization? Well the funny thing is that it's true. I could never be an artist in the career sense because the lack of stability and security would be difficult for me in the long run. That doesn't change the fact that I am an artist by nature and therefore need outlets in which to express myself at work.

According to those finding my top five interest areas were:

1. Writing & mass communication
2. Religion & Spirituality
3. Performing arts
4. Visual arts & design
5. Research

None of these fall within the conventional themes choice careers, so it helped me to figure out that my need for convention is more limited to my need for job security and a regular paycheck.

From there the report shows me my top ten strong occupations which are determined by comparing my results with the results of thousands of women currently happily employed in a list of 122 occupations.

1. Foreign Language Teacher
2. ESL Instructor
3. Minister
4. Social Science Teacher
5. Broadcast Journalist
6. English Teacher
7. Librarian
8. Social Worker
9. Technical Writer
10. Editor

I was a little surprised by the first two...but this isn't necessarily an indication of ability...more of similar interests. There definitely seems to be a theme to this list, so that helps.

Apparently the careers that they do not recommend based on my results are:

1. Physicist
2. Athletic Trainer
3. Mathematician
4. Investment Manager
5. Automobile Mechanic

I agree 100%

So from here I need to do some investigating and then the next time I get together with Emma we're going to look at the results of my personality test, how those results affect my career search, and start narrowing down my options.

One thing continually bothers me as I read Diana Gabaldon's richly detailed story of Claire Beauchampe, a doctor who innocently walks into a stone formation in Scotland and winds up in 16th century Scotland. Much has happened since this beginning...Claire has married Jamie Fraser the young and impressive Scottish Laird (against her wishes), fallen madly in love with him regardless of a precarious beginning to their relationship, followed him around as they attempt to evade the English, fought with him at the battle of Culloden, been forced back through the stones to safety with their unborn child, raised their child with her ambiguous husband from the future, returned after her child had grown up so that she could find him, made a new life with him in an American Colony, and been surprised by the appearance of her daughter and new son in law in 16th century America. Through their many, often rediculous, adventures there is that one thing that my brain ...

Excursions in beautiful Riviera Nayarit!

Well it's been just over a week now since I got back from my vacation. When I look back it's clear that outside of the normal bumps of any vacation, it was a very pleasant one! My parents and I flew into Puerto Vallarta at around 4pm on Friday July 1. As we stumbled into the crowded airport and attempted to manuever our way through the throngs of sales people, the kissy faces of a number of Mexican men made me suddenly all too conscious of my "Kiss me I'm Canadian" shirt. Oh well, like anyone would dare try with my Mom nearby (she gives off very protective Mom vibes...I think it may be because she's very protective). Anyway after a run in with a sales man who had briefly convinced us he was our Sun Wing Rep, we managed to slump into a nice air conditioned bus that took us the 20 minutes or so to Riviera Nayarit and up to our Resort "Riu Jalisco". It took me a good part of the trip to realize that the "j" is Jalisco is pronounced "h...

Gingerbread Cupcakes!

Well here they are, my rendition of a cupcake featuring ginger - in this case gingerbread cupcakes! I thought they turned out pretty good. I added 1/2 a cup more milk than I was supposed to and yet they managed to turn out fairly good texture wise. The flavour is a lot like gingerbread (with a few extra helpings of ginger) and the icing is a cream cheese icing.
