Adventures in Career Guidance Part 3

This session my career counsellor and I focused on the results of my personality test which came out as INFJ. This seemed odd to me because it wasn't very long ago that I did the Myers Briggs test myself online and was designated a strong INFP. We talked this over quite a bit and it became more and more obvious that neither of us could decide whether I am a Judger or a Perceiver. Although the recent test results show that I am a strong Judger, there are many things about my personality that I know do not fit in that category.

According to the Myers Briggs website these are the general profiles of each of these two types:

INFJ

Seek meaning and connection in ideas, relationships, and material possessions. Want to understand what motivates people and are insightful about others. Conscientious and committed to their firm values. Develop a clear vision about how best to serve the common good. Organized and decisive in implementing their vision.

INFP

Idealistic, loyal to their values and to people who are important to them. Want an external life that is congruent with their values. Curious, quick to see possibilities, can be catalysts for implementing ideas. Seek to understand people and to help them fulfill their potential. Adaptable, flexible, and accepting unless a value is threatened.

I've read more extensively on each of these two personality types and think that I am more likely an INFP, but perhaps I have Judger tendency's as well like wanting to be prepared for things (anyone who's seen my travel itineraries will know what I mean).

Anyway it is down to crunch time and I need to choose my top 3 careers and start interviewing and job shadowing. I keep reading over the lists of info on my top 10 careers so far and getting more and more confused about which ones to choose. I might really like some of the info on one, but be weary of other info like how little money you make (or how little), the amount of stress involved, or the years of education ahead of me if I choose it.

Here are the top 10 (based on test results, personal preferance, and research)
not in any particular order:

1) Secondary School Teacher (English or Social Sciences)
2) Editor
3) Librarian
4) Technical Writer
5) Broadcast Journalist/news analyst
6) Religion Teacher, Post Secondary
7) Educational/Vocational/School Counselor
8) Elementary School Educator
9) Paralegal
10) Creative Arts Therapist

    Do you have any careers that you are leaning towards, expeically if you don't consider the whole money/stress/school thing?

    If I don't consider the practicalities of it, I think I am most interested in being a secondary school teacher (english or social sciences), a journalist, or a thoelogy Prof.

Mmm Cupcakes!

 So I went over to the Harris household for what Laura and I have dubbed a cupcake date! For those of you who don't know who Laura is, she is Jonathon's little sister (refer to the story about Jonathon if you're not sure who Jonathon is). The cupcakes were so fun to make and turned out pretty good! Ever since Jonathon passed away about a year ago his family has kind of adopted me as the closest they'll ever have to a daughter in law. None of us know of course whether things would have worked out between Jonathon and me, but regardless of this fact and their acknowledgement of it, they have welcomed me as one of their own. It makes me happy that I made Jonathon happy for the short time he was in my life. I find myself connecting with his family on so many levels and feeling so at home with them. I have mixed feeling about all of this, but I think Jonathon would be happy that I met his family and continue to spend time with them. I hope I can be something of a comfort ...

You can dance if you want to

So I have a not-very-secret pleasure that I indulge in on occasion. I love to dance. I often dance around my apartment in the evening or on the weekend as I'm getting dressed (thank goodness I live alone or I might scare someone). My sister also likes to dance and so if my dancing becomes a social activity instead of an alone-in-my-apartment activity it would be because of her. I'm grateful for this because, though I love to dance, I find myself somewhat at odds with the dance scene in Calgary. Sure I like the idea of going Salsa dancing with friends or going to a club for a drink and some dancing, but the reality is very different. What the dance scene in Calgary really turns out to be is a meat market (singles scene). My Mom once asked me why I don't dance wth guys at clubs when I told her about us girls wearing each others wedding rings to try to avoid being hit on. Where has the time gone?

Alright so on the subject of random blogging, it has been a little while since I wrote anything on here. It's not because I have nothing to say or because nothing interesting has happened over the last few months, but because I am a self proclaimed random writer. I've never been good with deadlines or journaling or anything that takes follow through. I'm more of a in-the-minute, flying off the seat of my pants, motivated by inspirations and emotions kind of writer. So maybe I will give everyone a brief update on what has happened since July. 1) Enjoyed my trip to Pender Island (didn't see any whales on the whale watching excursion (boourns), but did see the biggest grossest jellyfish ever!) 2) Went camping with Danaya and her family along Kootenay Lake and survived a 16km hike up a mountain and back and hours of huckleberry picking (had a blast) 3) Cooked lots of Huckleberry goodies when I got home to share with family and friends (cobbler, pancakes, muffins, etc) ...
